Student Leadership
VISION
Caring leaders who grow, glow and guide.
At Fern Green, we believe that every student has the potential to lead. We believe leadership is not about titles — it is about influence, initiative and integrity. Through meaningful opportunities, mentorship and reflection, FGians grow into caring leaders.
GROW – GLOW – GUIDE
These three principles form the foundation of our 3-tiered leadership approach.
Growing Leaders – Lead Self
We believe that every
student is a leader. Students develop self-leadership by learning to take
responsibility, make good decisions and live out the school values in their
daily lives.
Glowing Leaders – Lead Peers
Students are given opportunities
to influence and support others through roles such as Class Leaders, Prefects
and Peer Support Leaders. They learn to communicate, collaborate and serve
their peers effectively.
Guiding Leaders – Lead the School
Student leaders
such as Prefects' EXCO members and CCA Leaders take on greater responsibilities
in leading initiatives, mentoring others and contributing to the school
community.
Through this three-tier framework, we nurture students to lead self, lead peers and lead the school, empowering them to become caring leaders and responsible citizens.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
To support our student leaders, we have adopted a structured framework known as The Leadership Challenge Model by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Through five key practices, this model serves as a leadership framework that guides both our training and self-reflection practices.
Student leaders participate in a range of training programmes and meetings throughout the year. Through vendor-led workshops and school-based training sessions, students develop leadership competencies such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving and service leadership.
Prefects’ Investiture
A key milestone in our leadership journey, the Prefects’ Investiture celebrates the appointment of student leaders and affirms their commitment to serving the school community. A unique feature of the ceremony is the formal EXCO handover, where outgoing leaders from our graduating P6 cohort pass the torch to the next generation of student leaders.
Head Prefect Elections
Modelled after Singapore’s electoral process, the Head Prefect Elections provide students with an authentic leadership experience. Candidates deliver speeches, design campaign materials, engage their peers and participate in interviews with school leaders, developing confidence, communication skills and civic literacy.
Student-Led Initiatives
Student leaders play an active role in school life by planning and supporting initiatives that serve the school community. These include staff appreciation efforts, school tours during Orientation and Open House, and other projects that foster a culture of care and service.
Service Learning
Our student leaders are given opportunities to make a positive impact beyond the classroom through service-learning experiences. One such programme is our collaboration with students from Nan Chiau High School at Dignity Kitchen, where Primary 4 Peer Support Leaders packed and distributed meals to seniors. Through meaningful interactions and exposure to sign language, students develop empathy, inclusivity and a deeper understanding of how leadership can be expressed through service to others.
